Cloud Antivirus Protection

Antivirus software is used in the prevention, detection and removal of malicious software such as computer virus, Trojans from a computer system. They come in different types; the conventional antivirus type based on virus signatures that are stored on the user computer. Downloading of new virus signatures is done on a regular basis to keep the anti-virus database up-to-date. All scanning is done locally and the user processor and memory is used in the process. There is the cloud based antivirus type which usually consists of a client (a lightweight program running on your machine) and Web service components (this is software which runs on some servers on the Internet. It will handle majority of the data processing exempting your machine from need of processing or storing large amounts of virus information).

Advantages of cloud based antivirus:

Access to the latest updates while using the web services as they are all kept up-to-date

Little processing is done locally thus no overload to your machine unlike the others which consume most of your processor and memory

I will be using Panda Cloud Antivirus. It is a cloud-based antivirus in that the user files are uploaded and scanned in remote servers thus does not consume the processor of the user computer. Click here to go to the homepage.

Panda offers two products. The Panda Cloud Antivirus recommended for home use. Click on the “For home” menu for a full list of features available for this SignUp. The second is the Panda Cloud Office recommended for use in office environments. Click on the “For Business” menu for a full list of services and charges offered for this SignUp.

For this tutorial, we will be signing up for the Panda Cloud Antivirus PRO. The product has a subscription of $29.99 per year. Panda cloud product can be used for Windows (8, 7, Vista) 32 and 64-bit and Windows XP from service pack 2 or later. For purchases, payments can be done using the following means

We will start off by creating a Panda account. Click on “access to account” link at the top right end of the home page. Loads a page where you log-in or sign up for an account if you don’t have one. Click on ‘Don’t have an account yet’ link at the bottom.

Loads a page where you enter your account credentials. A valid email address is required. Optional details include the nickname to use for your account, an avatar and signature. The code is for purchased version.

A success page for account creation loads informing of creation of your account.

Visit your email to check for the activation link. This must be used to complete account activation.

Loads a page which confirms that the account has been activated. Click on “Go to my account” link.

A login page loads where you enter the credentials of your account.

If the credentials are valid, a page loads with the account details. On the right is the panda cloud antivirus PRO edition product which you need to install. We can choose to buy or use the free version for 30 days. Click on ‘Try it free’ link to get started.

This opens a download executable. Download the file and choose to install

It opens a page where you accept the license agreement

Select desired installation options. You can change in the language, the installation folder, whether to install security toolbar in the browsers, setting blekko as the default search engine and setting mystart as the default home page for the browsers.

It then downloads the panda cloud antivirus

After installation complete, you need lo log-in with the credentials of a valid panda cloud account.

And the activation process begins

It is required you restart your machine for all settings to be complete. Start the panda cloud antivirus application. The interface is easy to navigate through. Time now to go through the application and set your application to work as you require it to.

An internet connection is required for up-to-date protection. In offline mode it relies on the local cache which holds details of common threats in circulation.

Cloud antivirus has reduced the need to download hundreds of MB of virus signatures to your local computer thus saving on space; it also saves on processor power as scanning done remotely. The challenge is getting the files to the remote server and the security of the files during transit. Also the algorithm used to make sure the thousands of files in the computer get scanned and priority used.

Other companies offering cloud based antivirus are Symantec, McAfee.

Sharath Reddy you’ve done marvelous work! Read tons of articles across the web but this one is really worth remembering. You are right, in the case of Cloud-based anti-virus software; the scenario is a little different. I need to download a native app for a cloud anti-virus. The app then connects with the cloud anti-virus database and exchange data between the cloud and the client PC accordingly. Web Browsers can also be used to scan the computer through ActiveX or Java. The client application installed on the PC checks files and matches with the virus signature database present in the cloud. If there is anything wrong with it then appropriate actions are taken. Superb post!!!!!!!!!!

“Very useful variations so thanks for sharing . I agree with you about Cloud based anti-viruses because the major advantage of cloud-based anti-viruses is that I don’t have to install them on my PC. Having anti-virus software installed on my PC consumes disk space, RAM and processing power and users who don’t have a high-end computer system might see a decline in the performance of their PC. The anti-viruses keep running in the background while I am working and this reduces available RAM and processing power for other applications thereby reducing application speed. Pretty elaborate post . Good work Sharathreddy.com .”

Sharath, while using Panda Cloud Antivirus, I faced some problem. Several times I saw this error message: “We have detected some problems while Panda Cloud Antivirus is trying to run and were able to trace it back to a missing or incorrect Windows OS registry key which are deleted by the uninstaller of some third party software (AVG) or some other software (Supportsoft from Verizon).” How I will solve this problem?

    • sharathreddy

Thanks for question. If you are getting this error, please do the following:
1.Uninstall Panda Cloud Antivirus. If you are unable to do this , use the CloudAV Uninstaller .
2.Open your registry from Start, Run, type regedt32 and hit enter.
      3.Browse to the following:
      32 Bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders
      64 Bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders
4.You should see an entry called Common AppData. If isn’t there or it’s wrong, add it or edit it. It should point to:
XP: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersProgram data. Other OS languages might have a different directory name (for ex Spanish: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDatos de programa)
      Vista/W7: C:ProgramData
      5. You can also download Panda Cloud Antivirus from http://www.cloudantivirus.com/ and re-install it again.
Also notice that if you have Supportsoft from Verizon please make sure to disable it or uninstall it as it is changing important Windows OS registry keys after every boot.

I have heard a lot of usefulness about Panda Cloud Antivirus. Reading your post, I installed Panda Cloud Antivirus. But after using some days, a dialog box appears and says that “PSUNMain has encountered a problem, and needs to be closed”. It is preventing me from using Panda. Would you please help me solving this problem, Sharath?

    • sharathreddy

It is a common problem. Many users sometimes face this problem. But don’t worry. There is a medicine for this disease.
      1. First of all, reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
      2. Then, indicate the following paths (if exists) and remove the “promo.mht” file:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataPanda SecurityPanda Cloud AntivirusUpselling
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataPanda SecurityPanda Cloud AntivirusUpsellingtemp
      3. Then simply reboot in normal mode. It should work fine now.

I have installed Panda Cloud Antivirus. But I am not sure whether it is running or not. How can I check this out? Is there any shortcut way that I can understand its running?

    • sharathreddy

Nice question. Just navigate to the system tray on the right-bottom side of your desktop. There, you will see a small logo of a panda (if Panda is installed). Then just click on that icon so that you can open the GUI and access all functions. Also you can right click on that icon and you can access some most using options easily.

I like Panda Cloud Antivirus. It is light and easy to work. It also takes less memory to be operated. First of all, I was confused about its requirements. Now I know that I am able to use it on my Windows XP Service Pack 3. I am also able to get a licensed version of Panda Cloud Antivirus. Now I feel safe and I am quite sure that there is no virus in my pc. Thanks sharathreddy.com for publishing this helpful post. Otherwise it was not possible for me to use this antivirus software.

Panda Cloud Antivirus has many hot fixes. Are those really necessary? Does the latest version contain all hot fixes?

    • sharathreddy

Hotfixes are used to fix any issues found related to product installation. In some case, your product can’t run smoothly. So then you need to use hotfixes to solve the issues. That is why hotfixes are for. But if you have got the latest version of Panda Cloud Antivirus, there is no need of installing any other hotfixes as it contains all hotfixes installed.

Panda offers two products. One is for home uses and another is for office environments. Sharath you have highlighted about Panda Cloud Antivirus PRO which is superb. PRO edition is extremely light and fast as it delegates all work to the cloud and relates non-intrusive intervention techniques, detecting even new and unknown viruses. I am looking forward the next instalment. I will definitely be using this for my PC moving forward.

Interesting post and a nice tutorial on pulling this data. And also thanks for the Sharath you slipped into your post. I really enjoyed the deep content, explanation, and the screenshots and very actionable information.
